A new scam has recently taken light in the form of scammers preying on 9/11 first responders and other Victims Compensation Fund Recipients.
First responders have reported that once they’re on the phone, the scammers say they are just “verifying information.” Even staff at the law firms that file the VCF information on their behalf are being targeted. The perps then attempt to solicit personal information such as addresses, social security numbers, and other private info.
New York senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand have written a letter to the US Justice Department and FTC demanding an investigation into who the scammers are and how they got the names and numbers of the people they are contacting.
If you have been a targeted enrollee in the VCF, gather as many details as you can and contact the fund hotline at (855) 885-1555. You can also report any scam calls to the FTC at 1-888-382-1222 or on the FTC’s complaint site.
